Noticing frustrations on the oversaturation of fast fashion in the industry, with unimaginative and hackneyed designs being produced daily, Rumbie Zowa and Stephanie Mpiana decided they could do it better. Building on their dream since secondary school to establish a fashion brand that truly embodies a woman's inner beauty, Zowa and Mpiana decided to make it a reality. With unwavering determination and a clear vision, they are confident in providing a unique and refreshing perspective to the fashion world.

Despite initial setbacks and delays caused by COVID, Zowa and Mpiana received crucial support from GC Business Finance, which allowed them to secure a £25,000 Start Up Loan. With the seed money, they started discussions with local manufacturers to realise their designs, with the aim to set up an online retail shopfront by the end of this year and challenge a market dominated by fast fashion.

Alongside the loan, they received pre-application support from GC Business Finance, which included essential mentoring and guidance to help them start on their entrepreneurial journey. “Just like most of the self-initiated entrepreneurs, Zowa and Mpiana have the passion and dedication in their dream, which are necessary qualities for a successful business,” said Alex, Business Advisor for Minako at GC Business Finance, “however, it is important for them to understand how a business actually operates and know the consequent of various decisions. We at GC Business Finance advise and guide businesses like Minako, helping them avoid pitfalls and succeed.”

Rumbie at Minako expressed her gratitude towards GC Business Finance for their unwavering support since the submission of their application. “In multiple meetings, the program's business advisors helped us to identify the potential risks and provided us with essential guidance, which is invaluable for us since our business is still in its early stages,” said Rumbie. “The trust and belief shown by everyone involved in the process is just phenomenal. Our business advisor’s encouragement was particularly meaningful as it boosted our confidence in the plan.”

Stephanie at Minako also emphasised that they were impressed by the additional support they received with the Start Up Loan program. “Unlike a typical bank loan, which focuses solely on the loan itself, this program prioritises the success of the business and offers all the necessary assistance,” said Stephanie.

“This is our initial attempt at drafting a business plan necessary for obtaining a loan. With the guidance provided by the business advisors throughout the process, we gained a comprehensive understanding of the various elements and aspects of the business. We are still in a very early stage, and I believe once we finish the discussion with the manufacturers and move to the retail stage, we will definitely seek more support from the Growth Company.”

James Davey, Underwriter, at GC Business Finance congratulated Rumbie and Stepanie for their success in obtaining the Start Up Loan. “The founder's vision, dedication, and passion in pursuit of success showcased by Minako has demonstrated the essence of female entrepreneurs in the North and GC Business Finance is proud to be a partner in their journey.”
